Yamuna River Initiative (YaRI)

The Yamuna River Initiative (YaRI)—a bold and timely educational initiative—is an interdisciplinary curriculum for school students in Delhi and the NCR centered on one of India’s most iconic yet endangered river. The curriculum is developed by the Modern Institute for Education.

YaRI aims to cultivate empathy, awareness, and stewardship in the next generation by reestablishing their connection with nature, starting with the river that flows through their city, through science, history, culture, and storytelling.

The specific objectives of the project are:-

To educate students about the importance of rivers in general and Yamuna in particular; her role in supporting biodiversity and its impact on human life, community and civilisation.

To raise awareness about the different types of water usage-drinking, agriculture, groundwater, and industrial water; and the challenges in balancing these needs in the face of growing global scarcity of water.

To highlight the issue of pollutants in the river including toxins, waste and industrial discharge, and explore how nature’s water cycle is being disrupted by human activity; raising awareness on the importance of reducing pollution and promoting sustainable practices.

To inform about the technologies and methods used for river cleaning, such as sewage treatment plants, and factory waste management, and their importance in maintaining the health of the river eco system.

To explain the importance of water conservation and management strategies, including efficient use of water in irrigation, industry, and in urban areas, and how individuals and communities can contribute to sustainable water practices.

To explore the cultural and historical significance of Yamuna in the development of the city of Delhi.

To encourage students to recognise their personal responsibility in promoting water conservation, reducing pollution, and participating in efforts to maintain healthy river ecosystem for future generations.

YaRI will unfold through three core components

A storybook, “The River Speaks”, narrated in the first person by the Yamuna herself — bringing to life her journey, biodiversity, cultural relevance, and current challenges. Designed with illustrations and fun facts, the book is both engaging and educational. The River Speaks is a rich, evocative, and multi-layered narrative that merges ecological insight with cultural storytelling. It is highly readable and accessible, particularly for its intended audience of children and young readers. The use of first-person anthropomorphism—where the Yamuna River tells its own story—successfully balances literary charm with environmental urgency.

A teacher’s handbook with subject- and grade-specific strategies to embed river literacy across the curriculum — from science and geography to literature and social studies.

A digital platform with videos, interviews, student-uploaded projects, and interactive content to deepen engagement and build a virtual river community.
